What Would Happen if We Didn’t Observe Daylight Savings Time?

Most people, myself NOT included, seem to always gripe and complain come this time of year about Daylight Savings Time.  Well, what would happen if we didn’t observe it and stuck to one time or the other?

If you have ever visited any parts of Arizona that do not observe Daylight Savings Time, in the middle of June, when the days are getting the longest of the year, then you will notice that the sun is up and it is full daylight at 5:15 in the morning and dawn will actually break somewhere around 4:45-5:00 in the morning.

The reason Arizona does this is because of the extreme heat of summer.  I found this out having family and friends that have lived in or still living in Arizona.

People can get out and do their running or exercise in the daylight and still get finished and ready for work, and later, come home to the sun going down at 7:00 in the evening so they can miss the hottest parts of the day.

So it works for them not to observe it.

Ironically enough, most of the people complaining about Daylight Savings Time are not morning people and would prefer the sun not come up till later in the morning.

But yet they hate Daylight Savings Time??  I am scratching my head wondering what the hell?

Those same people will be bitching a blue streak if the sun was up and shining bright at 5:15 in the morning, which is the reason we do observe Daylight Savings Time.

That way we save the daylight till later in the day. Yeah its only an hour, but who is gonna bitch about an hour more sleep in the dark?  Seems pointless to complain but still people do and will continue.

Now lets look at the other side of the spectrum where if we went to Daylight Savings Time and never changed back.

We actually did that back in 1974.  According to Wikipedia, during the 1973 oil embargo, Congress decided to not switch back to standard time from Daylight Savings Time beginning January 6, 1974, and ending April 27, 1975.  What happened was kids like myself going to school in the dark and the sun not coming up till over halfway through the first class of the day and full daylight not until the middle of the second class of the day.

So the act was amended in October 1974 to return to standard time for the period beginning October 27, 1974, and ending February 23, 1975 and the regular summertime observance of Daylight Savings Time returned in the fall of 1975.

So either way, the daylight hours we are used to (because of Daylight Savings Time) would be altered and that would commence in more griping and complaining.

In short, quit your complaining and enjoy that the life we are accustomed to is all due to the observance of Daylight Savings Time, and the return to standard time at the appropriate times during the year.
