Today's "Random' proves that Canadians really were ahead of the curve on rap songs. Yes, I said rap songs.

You might think that the US would lead the world in rap, but as it turns out, Canada had a rap song hit number one on its charts a full decade before the U.S.  "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang was number one in Canada in 1980!

The song was recorded in 1979 and while it was not the first single to feature rapping, it is generally considered to be the song that first popularized hip hop in the United States and around the world. Yet for as popular as it was, it wasn't the first rap song to make it to #1 on the US charts. That honor went to the next song:

"Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice was number one in the U.S. in 1990.

What was your favorite song of that decade?
