This Day In History – The Luby’s Massacre and the Birth of Gun Rights

It was on this day October 16, 1991 a massacre took place in Killeen, Texas. George Hennard (born October 15, 1956) drove his pickup into a Luby’s cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, wounding another 20 subsequently committing suicide by shooting himself. It was a day that changed Susanna Gracia Hupp’s life forever. She in turn, changed Texas’ and America’s view on guns and the Second Amendment forever.

Suzanna Hupp was present at the time of the massacre where both of her parents were shot and killed. She later expressed regret for obeying the law by leaving her firearm in her car rather than keeping it on her person due to the fact that it was illegal to do so and could have cost her her chiropractic license.

She testified across the country in support of concealed handgun laws, and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1996. In response to the massacre and her efforts, in 1995 the Texas Legislature passed a shall-issue gun law, which requires that all qualifying applicants be issued a Concealed Handgun License (the state’s required permit to carry concealed weapons), removing the personal discretion of the issuing authority to deny such licenses.  The law was signed by then-Governor George W. Bush.

In the video, Ms. Hupp dispells the myths of ‘Assault Weapons’, ‘gun violence’, ‘legitimate sporting purpose’ and the ban of ‘extended magazines’, and lays out the argument that legislatures are the biggest threat to our safety by banning the ability for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves.
