One look at the new poster for Sofia Coppola’s new dark period thriller The Beguiledand you may think you’re in safe company. That’s certainly what Colin Farrell’s Union soldier thinks when he arrives, wounded, at a Confederate girls’ boarding school. Oh boy, was he wrong.

A remake of Don Siegel’s 1971 film starring Clint Eastwood, Coppola’s latest, one of our most anticipated of the year – I mean, have you seen that trailer? Have you seen it five times? No… just me? – finds Farrell’s enemy soldier seeking refuge in a girls’ school run by Nicole Kidman. The sexual tension is high, and literally bursting at the seams as Farrell’s seen seducing the various women and ripping their clothes off in the trailer. But then, things go South (no geographical pun intended), and take a very nasty turn. You wouldn’t know it though, upon first look.

The new poster for Coppola’s twisty female-driven film teases the menacing blood lust lingering behind the women’s calm, manicured demeanours. Elle Fanning’s character sits politely at the edge of the bed of the injured Farrell, her eyes suspiciously slanted to her side. Kirsten Dunst looks gentle, but her icy gaze at the camera suggests something sinister lurks there. And Kidman? Well, that piteous furrow of her brow as she stares down at Farrell hints that she plans to show no mercy on this man’s soul. Here’s the full synopsis:

The Beguiled is an atmospheric thriller from acclaimed writer/director Sofia Coppola. The story unfolds during the Civil War, at a Southern girls’ boarding school. Its sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events.

The movie makes its debut at Cannes later this month before finally hitting theaters June 23.
