Superman’s Mustache Will Be Digitally Erased for ‘Justice League’

How does Superman shave?

It’s a question comics fans have debated for decades. The Man of Steel presumably grows facial hair that’s hard as, well, steel, something which would be tough even for the latest and greatest Gillette Fusion Power Turbo Zillion-Bladed Laser Focus Upgrade Whatever model. (Gillette itself has pondered this topic.)

But we’ll get to that in just a moment.

Currently Warner Bros. is filming a series of extensive (and expensive) re-shoots for Justice League, the upcoming team-up of DC’s biggest superheroes. But while the actors playing Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and the Flash (Ezra Miller) have generally had no problem with the schedule, Superman (Henry Cavill) is a different story.

From Variety:

‘Justice League’s Man of Steel had expected to be able to finish shooting the sixth ‘Mission: Impossible’ film before needing to don Superman’s spandex again. That has not been the case, however, as the new scenes that are being shot have required him to jump back and forth from each production. Because of this, a mustache he grew for his character in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ sequel will have to be digitally removed in post-production. Paramount, which is distributing the ‘Mission: Impossible’ sequel, would not allow Cavill to shave the facial hair while production was taking place.

So basically, one studio (Paramount) won’t accommodate a rival (Warner Bros.)—typical Hollywood intrigue stuff, right?—forcing the Justice League team to digitally remove Superman’s masculine lip sweater.

But that’s not all we found out about Justice League.

Though it doesn’t come as a huge surprise, this news confirms that Superman will definitely return for Justice League after Doomsday killed him at the end of 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Everyone more or less assumed he’d be back (as was hinted at during the final moments of the movie), but Superman has been all but absent from the film’s marketing onslaught.

Now let’s go back to the Superman-shaving question.

The most popular answer has been that he uses a mirror to deflect his own heat vision, which burns off his stubble, as seen in the comics and on two TV programs:

So now we have a new answer to that dilemma: post-production digital erasure. (Honestly, we like the heat-vision thing better.)
