They weren't kidding when they said you have to leave it all behind in the name of stardom.

Meryl Streep, a veritable gold mine of Oscar-related memes, stars as a rock star who abandoned her family to pursue her dreams in Ricki and the Flash, which hits theaters on August 7. In the brand new trailer above, heartbreak that stems from Ricki's desertion proves to be just as vicious as a designer drug addiction or fiery dispute over tour royalties.

The film, written by Juno creator Diablo Cody, finds Ricki returning home upon news that her daughter, Julie, has been left high and dry by her husband, and is not handling the fallout well. Still, having been burned by Ricki's disappearing act, Julie and her siblings aren't so receptive to their mother's sudden acts of kindness, and seem to prefer to keep her at arm's length.

On a happier note, the film's soundtrack will include 10 songs that feature Streep's voice and guitar-playing, which director Jonathan Demme told NME was more than he could have asked for.

"Meryl is such a versatile and charismatic singer/performer, and her movie band the Flash is kind of an amazing supergroup," he said. "A Ricki and the Flash concert film would be a joy to capture and present."
