The Root Beer Fun Run is a fundraiser for a scholarship fund created in memory of John Butler, a Midland High School student who passed away in a tragic accident last year.

According to NewsWest 9, John Butler was only 16 when he was tragically killed in August 2017, but he loved running and spending time outside and wanted to make a difference in the community.

To honor that, his family created the fun run where participants run a mile long race and drink a can of root beer before each lap they run.

The fundraiser puts all the funds into the John Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund set up by his family that gives back to seniors in Midland, Odessa, and Greenwood.

"My brother always wanted to make a big impact on the community so they thought they would do this to honor him," said Justin Butler, John's older brother. "When you start paying for college, you realize college is pretty expensive, I wish I had a couple bucks to help me out so it's always fun to not pay more for college."

The Root Beer Fun Run will be on Saturday May 19, 2018 at Memorial Stadium in Midland. To register, you can visit the fun run's Facebook page.
