With the explosion of growth in Midland and the explosion of traffic as well, Midland City Council approved a project to widen State Highway 349.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, the expansion would cover the stretch of highway from Loop 250 north to the Midland County line.

The expansion would widen the road to five lanes and to add medians to prevent drivers from using the left turn lanes as an acceleration and merging lane.

The cost of the project will be $12 million which would be largely funded by TxDOT with the City of Midland putting up only $1.65 million.
