7 Things We’re Dying to See From Lady Gaga’s Las Vegas Residency
Following years of rumors surrounding the possibility of a Las Vegas residency, Lady Gaga announced Tuesday (December 19) that she will officially kick off her own two-year special engagement at the MGM Park Theater in late 2018.
"It's the land of Elvis, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, Elton John, Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli," Gaga gushed in a press release from MGM Resorts. "It has been a life-long dream of mine to play Las Vegas. I am humbled to be a part of a historical line-up of performers, and to have the honor of creating a new show unlike anything Vegas has ever seen before."
"I'll tell you exactly what I told my MGM and Park Theater partners: you can count on this performer always for one thing… I'll leave my heart on the stage every single night," she added. "Thank you to my fans for always believing in me. Meet me in Las Vegas baby, we did it!"
While the pop star gears up to make her Vegas showgirl debut, there are a handful of Gaga performance hallmarks we can expect from the forthcoming residency: lots of glitter, an endless assortment of smash dance songs, and tons of visual drama.
Below, we've rounded up seven things we've love to see from Lady Gaga's Las Vegas residency:
1. Album era throwbacks
Unlike industry veterans and fellow Vegas performers Britney, Mariah, Celine and J-Lo, Gaga, who officially debuted in 2008, only logs about a decade of hits under her belt. (But oh, what hits they are!) Despite her still-young career, over the past ten years or so Gaga has launched a number of memorable, pop culture-defining album eras, pushing the artist into icon territory.
We'd love to see throwbacks to her days from The Fame (whatever did happen to that disco stick, anyway?), as well as nods to the '80s bombshell hair metal visuals of Born This Way and the pure camp of Artpop (bring back the seashell bra!). Plus, we can't forget The Fame Monster, which spawned one of the 2000's most massive pop hits ("Bad Romance"), and even the rhinestone cowgirl swagger of her current album cycle, Joanne, deserves recognition within Gaga's legacy of indelible work.
2. Acoustic and piano ballads
Though casual listeners likely consider Gaga a pop star first and foremost, she is, at her core, a celebrated vocalist and musician. While her Vegas show will undoubtedly showcase the over-the-top theatrics Gaga fans have become accustomed to, we hope she'll include some quieter, stripped-down acoustic moments on her guitar ("Million Reasons") and piano ("You and I," "Speechless") so her stunning vocal abilities can shine.
3. Exciting special effects
Whether flames are bursting from her bra like at the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards, or she's performing in front of blazing fires like at the 2017 Grammys, Gaga is no stranger to pyrotechnics.
We'd love to see some fire on Gaga's Vegas stage ("John Wayne," "Marry the Night" and "Bad Romance" would make for a great, fiery segment), as well as dazzling moving set pieces, laser lighting and possibly some acrobatics. (Remember how the pop star descended from the stadium roof at the 2017 Super Bowl? More, please!)
4. One-of-a-kind costumes (both nostalgic and new!)
Aside from her repertoire of smash singles, Gaga is nothing if not known for her sartorial choices: For better or worse, it's impossible to disconnect the "Fashion" singer from the phrase "meat dress" or the image of McQueen.
It'd be a treat to see Gaga bust out some fashion oldies but goodies during her residency, like the structured disco gowns from her Monster Ball Tour or the industrial leather pieces from her Born This Way Ball Tour. If that's too redundant, though, she'll likely debut an edgy, glittery new stage wardrobe fit for Vegas. (Think towering heels, couture crystal bodysuits and wild hair and makeup.) As long as the looks are over-the-top, we'll be happy.
5. Fierce choreography
When she's not belting out ballads at her piano or rattling off "Million Reasons" on her acoustic guitar, we prefer to our Gaga dancing (speaking of which, "Dance in the Dark" definitely deserves a spot on the set list). In addition to her powerful vocals and show-stopping style, the pop star is also a talented dancer who is able to perform tight, impressive high-energy choreography with or without backing dancers. Bluntly put: Gaga's got the moves, and we want to see them on full display in Vegas.
6. Audience interaction
Some of the most memorable Vegas residency moments have happened when audience members were brought on stage, from Mariah's sexy "Touch My Body" serenade to Britney's kinky "Freakshow" dance. Little Monsters would go gaga (pun intended) for an opportunity to dance alongside their fave, but we hope to see something even weirder: Will she crucify someone during "Judas"? Hatch someone out of an egg during "Born This Way"? Shower a fan in beautiful, dirty cash during "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich"? The options are endless!
7. Deep cuts and forgotten gems
Sure, "Just Dance" is still a bop and "Bad Romance" remains as fresh as ever, but some of Gaga's best tracks are the songs that didn't make it to radio or receive the single treatment. With a Vegas residency acting somewhat like a career tribute, we'd love to hear the singer revisit fan favorites and B-sides like "Teeth," "Sexxx Dreams," "Monster" and "Highway Unicorn."
