Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down was Netflix’s most luxuriously expensive show to date, but didn’t make as many waves during its premiere as it was probably meant to, the buzz trickling away pretty quickly after Part 1 was released earlier this fall. But it did rocket its star, Justice Smith, into the spotlight, as he’s now been cast in J. A. Bayona’s Jurassic World sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith joins Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who are both returning to the franchise. The film is still in early pre-production, and is expected to start shooting sometime early next year, with most of the plot details from Colin Trevorrow’s script being kept under wraps, with Smith’s character a mystery.

We do know, however, that this movie will deal in some way with modern animal rights, using the dinosaurs as a metaphor. And with the probable return of B.D. Wong’s Dr. Henry Wu, who was engineering hybrid dinosaurs to sell to the Army in Jurassic World, this could mean getting into the exciting and adventurous world of PATENT LAW. In Jurassic Park, the InGen Corporation patented their dinosaurs so that no other company could use their technology to bring extinct species back to life. Wu’s going to have to pull a similar caper if he wants to sell his designs to anyone, and on top of that, he’ll have to deal with some people who might think that “owning” the life and body and rights of a creature is wrong, even if Velociraptors may not understand the finer points of the legal business. They’re pretty smart, though, so they might. We know they can open doors.

Jurassic World 2 opens in theaters June 22, 2018.
