When you go to watch an Alex Ross Perry movie, you know you’re in for something that’s a little bit weird. His previous film Queen of Earth stars Elisabeth Moss as a woman slowly losing her mind while on a vacation with a few friends. His new film Golden Exits doesn’t contain any characters going crazy (at least, not that it seems) but the new trailer is suffused with that signature understated, almost dreamlike quality his movies have.

Golden Exits, primarily, is about what happens when a new arrival upsets the natural order of things. Emily Browning’s Naomi is clearly displaced, and creates new tensions and complications for the people around her during her short stay in Brooklyn, upsetting a few love affairs and ruining a few friendships.

Nick (Adam Horovitz) has settled into a safe existence in a small pocket of Brooklyn, where he currently toils on an archival project for his father-in-law. Soon, 20-something Naomi (Emily Browning) arrives from Australia to assist Nick for the semester. She has no acquaintances in the city beyond a loose family connection to Buddy (Jason Schwartzman), a music producer who lives in the same neighborhood. For the few months she spends around Nick, Buddy, and their families, Naomi’s presence upsets the precarious balance holding these two households.

Golden Exits also stars Chloë SevignyMary-Louise ParkerJason Schwartzman, and opens February 9.
