Only three episode into 'Game of Thrones' third season, and Sunday's all-new episode "Walk of Punishment" took to punishing a different part of the body in its shocking final moments. Readers of George R.R. Martin's books may have known the event was coming, but what does series star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau have to say about Jaime Lannister's arc going forward? Get the latest on 'Game of Thrones' season 3's handy future inside!

Spoilers beware for Sunday night's 'Game of Thrones' episode "Walk of Punishment," which culminated in a brutal sequence cut straight from the book of Jaime Lannister having his sword-hand severed in a lesson of obedience. Certain modifications were made for HBO's rendition however, which saw the brutal act carried out by Bolton bannerman Locke (Noah Taylor), rather than the "Bloody Mummers" of George R.R. Martin's novel 'A Storm of Swords.'

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau opened up to Vulture about the big scene, which naturally has an even bigger impact on Jaime Lannister going forward, beyond the difficult survival of such a dangerous injury. Not only will the loss of his hand affect his relationship with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), but also his entire outlook going forward:

I love all the scenes that come after this. It deals with those questions: Who is Jaime? Will this force him to take a good look at himself? This is a world driven by fear, and suddenly he's not dangerous anymore. Actually, I've always thought his biggest strength, until now, was reading people. He's very good at using people's weaknesses against him, like when he saves Brienne from being raped by mentioning the Sapphire Isle. That's just something he makes up, to play on their greed. He just didn't know that hatred trumps greed.

Coster-Waldau went on to clarify that the relationship between he and Brienne was one of mutual respect, rather than romance or friendship, one sure to grow even more complex as the two come to depend upon one another in their respective captivity.
