I am of the opinion that “Too Many Cooks” is one of the great short films of my lifetime. It’s a parody of schmaltzy ’90s sitcom opening credits that keeps going and going and folding on itself and getting weirder and stranger and funnier for 12 full minutes. It’s a tough act to top, and it’s taken its creator, Casper Kelly, several years to make another short to rival it. But Kelly has done it with “Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough,” which just premiered on Adult Swim.

This 20-minute short (co-created by Kelly and Nick Gibbons) mimics the form of YouTube video game walkthrough videos. It starts with a stereotypical nerd talking you through a violent video game about a soldier fighting a war against aliens. Then the war ends ... and the game keeps going, and now he’s walking you through menial tasks like fighting with your mom and going to work at a pharmacy. Then, in “Too Many Cooks” style, reality begins fracturing and fragmenting, until the entire universe is ready to fold in on itself.

Watch it right here. It is truly amazing. And you have to watch to the very end; the ultimate punchline happens after the closing credits. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Is it too late to change my list of the best movies of 2018 so far to include “Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough”? Because I want to change it. This is definitely better than most of the films I actually paid to see this year so far. If I had my own TV network, I would give Casper Kelly the money he wants to do whatever he wants. A show, a film, more weird short; anything. Just give me more.
