ECISD is giving the green light to UTPB to sell alcohol at football games at Ratliff Stadium.

According to NewsWest 9, there is a stipulation though, the alcohol would have to be sold under a tent as a thank you to the top donors to the athletic program at the school.

“Most universities have football programs and they have their own spaces, so they can entertain donors and try to raise funds for their athletic programs,” said Dr. Sandra Woodley, President of UTPB.

The action was approved since Dr. Woodley stressed the alcohol sales would be for raising funds during the school board meeting on Tuesday night.

“We need scholarships for example to be able to go out and recruit athletes. Most of our athletes are scholars. We have the highest GPA of all of the athletes in the Lone Star Conference. We had 40-something athletes who were going to be engineers in the Permian Basin,” said Dr. Woodley.

The proposal states that an outside company with the required licenses to sell alcoholic beverages would be the ones to sell alcohol at all home games.

The contract for the VIP tent is only for the 2018-19 season for now.
