It started late last Friday, when People magazine ran a mysterious teaser for Dundee — a sequel to Paul Hogan’s classic Crocodile Dundee movies, starring Danny McBride as the American son of the titular Aussie hero. With little else to go on and with McBride premiering a film at Sundance this week, we assumed the teaser was a fake-out of some kind. Surely a bunch of people didn’t go off into the Outback and make a top-secret sequel to something like Crocodile Dundee, of all things…right? But then another teaser appeared.

And this one also features Chris Hemsworth:

Is Taika Waititi behind this? Are we being pranked? Maybe not.

The teaser opens with a logo for Rimfire Films, which just so happens to be the production company behind the original Crocodile Dundee movies. It was also co-founded by Paul Hogan himself. There’s also an official website for Dundee, which, as far as I can tell, is legit. I even took a quick glance at the “Terms and Conditions” and “Privacy Statement” pages, and there doesn’t seem to be anything fishy about it.

Here’s the plot summary, which sounds like your average Danny McBride joint, and which teases the return of Hogan’s eponymous protagonist:

Crocodile Dundee is back. Well, actually, he’s missing in the Outback. And the only person who might be able to find him is the loudmouthed American son no-one knew he had. This son of a legend is forced to channel his Aussie roots as he embarks on the ultimate adventure in the land down under. It’s time to live up to the family name.

Hogan portrayed the eccentric crocodile poacher in three films: The 1986 original, its 1988 follow-up, and the completely forgotten 2001 sequel, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.

In this era of reboots and revivals, Dundee doesn’t seem that unbelievable, and if anyone could come up with an idea worthy of our interest for this franchise, it’d be Danny McBride (and Chris Hemsworth, apparently). Of course, this could very well be an elaborate setup for another McBride project, or some sort of wacky lead-in to a Super Bowl promo. Who knows?

I’m sure we’ll have fun figuring it out.
