Demolition began today (January 29, 2019) on the former Building of the Southwest on the corner of Illinois and Big Spring.

According to NewsWest 9, City of Midland met with Midwest Wrecking Company of Texas, Inc. to begin the process of demolishing the former Building of the Southwest that has been vacant for more than 30 years.

First part of the demolition will be the internal architecture and basement levels, mechanical removal of an adjacent two-story building, and removal of the exterior trim on the lower levels.

This will cause traffic problems in an around the area since lanes closures will be necessary on Big Spring from now through project completion in April.

Northbound lanes on Big Spring will be closed and traffic diverted onto the left turn lane and one southbound lane, two lanes of Texas Ave. will also be closed for the duration of the project.

Completion of the demolition is scheduled for late March to mid-April 2019.
