A guardian angel must have been watching over Dick Van Dyke because his car caught on fire and exploded on Monday, but he managed to get out unharmed.

The 87-year-old was driving down the 101 Freeway in Calabasas, Calif. on Monday afternoon (Aug. 19) when he heard a strange noise and his Jaguar started to smoke -- at which point he pulled over.

When police arrived at the scene, they noted that Van Dyke was still inside and that he was seemingly unaware that the car was on fire.

He was pulled from danger by a passerby and two off-duty nurses who happened to be in the area.

The passerby, Jason Pennington, told TMZ that he found Van Dyke struggling inside and pulled him to safety, while the actor claims he was busy on his phone at the time and everyone was convinced he had fainted.

Van Dyke was said to be disoriented by the experience, which could explain the differing stories -- but regardless, he managed to escape without a scratch while the vehicle ended up exploding.

You can check out videos of the explosion below along with a Vine taken by Van Dyke's wife, Arlene, of the aftermath.
