The Defenders will bring us the spectacle of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist united, so it came as little surprise Jon Bernthal’s Punisher would stick to his spinoff for now. Marvel isn’t certain how, or when a second Defenders season might take place, but The Punisher may not become a team player then, either.

That’s the word from Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb, who told Collider the future of Marvel’s Netflix heroes isn’t quite written in stone. It could take another few years before a second Defenders team-up takes shape, and Loeb seems to view Frank Castle as a character best left to stand-alone adventures:

We haven’t really gotten to that place; I don’t know if there will be a Defenders #2. I think one of the things that is unique to The Punisher, and particularly to Jon Bernthal’s performance, is that the character can stand alone. I think even in the comic books, Frank Castle’s Punisher is a character that sort of does well by himself. I think that when you start mixing it in, it feels a little off. I’m not saying that it couldn’t happen and I’m not saying that it wouldn’t happen, I’m just saying it doesn’t immediately lend itself towards, ‘Oh yeah, sure, I can see The Punisher and Luke Cage hanging out with each other!’ I think you sort of go, ‘That feels like … you know, peanut butter and asparagus.’

The Punisher is currently eyed for November, with Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2, and Daredevil Season 3 due out in 2018. It took two years to move from Daredevil to The Defenders, so if a second team-up happens around 2019, should The Punisher tag along, or will a new generation of heroes have taken over Netflix?
