Ciara + Russell Wilson Relocated Wedding Due to North Carolina Bathroom Law
The newlyweds had originally planned to marry in North Carolina, but decided to change locations entirely once they heard about the state’s controversial and discriminatory bathroom law, according to wedding planner Mindy Weiss via TheKnot.com.
“I did the whole thing — three times,” Weiss told the site. “They were first getting married in North Carolina, but they called it off due to the transgender bathroom laws.”
Ciara and Wilson then decided to hold the ceremony in Paris, but ran into some trouble when they realized it was Fashion week. They ultimately settled on England.
“We ended up in London,” Weiss explained. “They wanted to be away. And we found a castle that was an hour out of Liverpool and they had about 110 guests.”
Ciara and Wilson’s decision to silently protest the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, also known as the HB2 bill, is the latest in a long line of celebrity admonishments.
Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato canceled their North Carolina shows on their Future Now Tour as a show of support for the LGBTQ community, as did other huge artists like Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Ringo Starr, Boston and Ani DiFranco. Others like Selena Gomez, Cyndi Lauper and Mumford and Sons chose to donate the proceeds from their North Carolina shows to benefit a local LGBTQ organization.
