‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Feature Disney’s First Openly Gay Character

Slowly but surely, Disney is becoming a little more woke. With last year’s politically-minded (and now Oscar-winning) Zootopia, announcements of Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie and first black superhero movie, and making Ava DuVernay the first woman of color to helm a $100 million movie, the studio is adding diversity to their roster little by little. Now the studio has finally decided to feature their first openly gay character in not just any movie, but a remake of a Disney classic.

London Theater Pranks Customers With Oscar-Inspired ‘La La Land’/‘Moonlight’ Mix-Up

Last night viewers shuffled in for a late showing of Moonlight at the Rio cinema in the Dalston neighborhood of London’s Hackney region. As they settled down with their bags of Licorice Allsorts, Sherbet Fountains, and Jelly Babies (all of which are, incredibly, real candies), they were greeted by a surprise on screen. Instead of the opening strains of a chopped-and-screwed remix of Boris Gardiner‘s “Every N----- Is a Star,” however, they were greeted by the bright blue sky and the first twenty seconds of “Another Day of Sun,” the opening number of none other than La La Land! “Cor, bit cheeky, innit?” the audience said in perfect unison, in my imagination.

And the Podcast Goes To… Episode 5: Losing Best Picture Was the Best Outcome for ‘La La Land’

It’s been one heck of an awards season. For months we’ve speculated and debated the biggest movies of 2016 and on Sunday night the Oscars handed us the craziest twist of all time. After La La Land was named the Best Picture winner before immediately losing to the correct winner, Moonlight, we all know to never turn off our TVs before the credits roll on the Oscars broadcast.

Warren Beatty Gives Official Response to Oscars Kerfuffle

We‘re now a couple days out from the incident itself, and everyone’s still trying to figure out just what in the Sam Hill happened at the Oscars on Sunday night. When Faye Dunaway wrongly named La La Land instead of Moonlight as the recipient of the Best Picture Academy Award, she created a buzzy moment and sparked a full-blown investigation as to how things could have gotten mixed up. Fingers have been pointed every which way, with the show’s producers and vote-tabulating accountants both scrambling to cover their respective hindquarters in the wake of the embarrassing gaffe. Today, however, Dunaway‘s co-presenter Warren Beatty – the man with his hand on the envelope — has offered his official response to the hubbub, and he’s decided to shift blame elsewhere.

‘Moonlight’ Expanding to 1500 Screens, So Now You Have No Excuse

Did you see Moonlight, the Oscar-anointed Best Picture which also happens to be the actual best picture of the year? No? Why not? The common answers include “looked super sad” (accurate, but shouldn’t be a deterrent), “looked boring” (empirically incorrect), “couldn’t relate to it” (probably a little racist, a little homophobic, or both), “been busy lately” (get your priorities in order), and moreso than any other, “wasn’t playing near me.” That last one is hard to argue with, as A24’s October release did leave a lot of communities bereft of access to Moonlight. But as this film’s mass-marketability has become evident with high-profile Oscar wins and a $26 million gross on a budget of $1.5 million, A24 has smartly moved to spread the love.

Brad Pitt Looks Like a Counter-Terrorism Ken Doll in ‘War Machine’ Trailer

Unless your name happens to be Kathryn Bigelow (and if it is, then may I say that it’s a pleasure, Ms. Bigelow, big Point Break fan), Hollywood has had a lot of trouble figuring out how to portray the Global War on Terror. The odd movies that have succeeded critically or financially — Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper — take an ambivalent stance on a complicated and nuanced geopolitical situation, but many more have attempted the same and floundered. So it’s with memories of the high-profile failure of one-time Oscar hopeful Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk that we greet the trailer for War Machine, Netflix’s latest foray into this risky genre.

Academy Reportedly Considers Hiring More Oscar Auditors as Soon as They Stop Analyzing This Guy‘s Tweet

Perhaps even more incredible than Envelopegate is how quickly the whole thing escalated, and our collective fascination with what instantly (and maybe inarguably) became the most memorable Oscar moment of all time. (To be fair, America was in desperate need of a distraction.) Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty’s Best Picture envelope mixup is the best-worst thing to happen to the Oscars in years, but it’s not a mistake they’re eager to repeat; according to a new report, they’re considering a possible solution, which they’ll get around to as soon as they finish exhaustively scrutinizing this tweet.

You Can’t Stop the ‘Trolls’ Sequel From Hitting Theaters in 2020

DreamWorks and Universal’s surprise animated hit is — unsurprisingly — getting a sequel. The news comes on the heels of Justin Timberlake’s charismatic opening number at the 2017 Oscars earlier this week — something most of you probably forgot all about at least two hours before Envelopegate even happened, somewhere between candy parachutes and that weird tour bus interlude.
