Olympic Gold Medalist Doug Russell is getting a movie made about his training that led him to beat Mark Spitz for the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics.

According to NewsWest 9, the man who wrote the screenplay held auditions for the role of a coach in the story about Doug Russell.

David Bryant Perkins swam under Coach Doug Russell at the University of Texas Arlington and decided to write a screenplay about the man who coached him in swimming.

Perkins said he wants the movie to be shot exclusively in Texas and mostly in Midland as well. He said he wants to bring Russell's story to a younger generation.

Perkins traveled to Midland to find authentic West Texas people to help tell the story of Doug Russell from his time as a Midland High Bulldog swimmer to becoming an Olympic gold medalist.
