Best + Worst Dressed of the Week: Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, Nicole Richie + More
With the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars taking place this past week — not to mention all the other events — there were lots of fashion “wow” moments. (But we won’t bother rehashing Anne Hathaway and Gowngate. It’s best to let that one go.)
In her poufy white Dior gown, Jennifer Lawrence was like Cinderella at the Oscars, but she was utterly banging in black at the Indie Spirits. Meanwhile, the usually faboo Nicole Richie faltered in brown velvet at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. And that’s just for starters.
As previously mentioned, Lawrence’s black, asymmetrical Lanvin frock from the Independent Spirits on Feb. 23 was a jaw-dropper. She worked it, smartly pulling her hair into a bun to show off the neckline and back, while the belted sash, heavy artillery collar and skirt shape were flawlessly executed.
From the back, it was even more fierce, dripping with skin-showing, criss-cross strap sexiness. Even her stilettos looked better from the back, thanks to the gold mirrored plating on the heel. See it?
We’ll throw in a pic of her almost bridal Dior, in which she picked up her Best Actress statue at the Oscars. Both dresses show us the consummate fashionista that J. Law has become.
Michelle Williams may have split with Jason Segel — we’re still bumming hard about that one — but she crushed it at the UK premiere of ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ in a peacock, strapless Burberry Prorsum dress in a tea length. Burberry is the house designer of England, so wearing the label was a choice chess move on her part. That creamy skin and those sideswept bangs blew us away.
Miley Cyrus has made some questionable fashion decisions in her life, but she’s grown into that chopped ‘do. It seemed like a really bad idea at the time but we’ll admit she’s owning it these days, and she was chic in this wintry white Azzaro gown with three-quarter length sleeves that she wore to Elton John’s Oscar party last weekend.
Like J. Law’s Lanvin, Miley’s dress was better from the back. The bling that hits the small of her back? Who needs a tramp stamp when you have this? It was subtle and sexy, and her chunky bracelets were a well-coordinated touch, too.
We couldn’t shake how much we disliked Halle Berry‘s loungey striped Versace dress from the Oscars. The shoulders were Gladiator-like.
Nicole Richie wore a dress by Etro that was dark brown, velvet and ruched on the bodice. The fabric and color were heavy, her smoky eye makeup was too dark, and she had a mess atop her head. A rare flop from a stylish celebutante.
Florence Welch wore a sheer blue outfit by Christopher Kane to the 2012 NME Awards. It made her green Givenchy gown from the Grammys look fabulous. We get that Flo is an ethereal goddess who cannot be contained by mere mortal threads, but this did nothing for the talented songstress.
There were some other pretty dresses that weren’t quite the best of the week, but they deserve props anyway.
Britney Spears, with her new chocolate brown locks, showed side boob in a Michael Cinco Couture gown at Elton John’s hot ticket Oscar party.
And pop singer Skylar Grey wore a square-topped charcoal Armani gown that was as simple as it was stunning. The embellished train might be our favorite part.
