In Another, Better World Beyoncé Was in the Live-Action ‘Beauty and the Beast’

beyonce-2Regardless of what you thought of the live-action Beauty and the Beast, the truth is, the Disney remake could have been better. I could rattle off a list of things to improve it – the new songs could’ve been better, that “exclusively gay moment“ could have gone down differently, etc. But now an even greater missed opportunity for the film has been revealed, one that would have surely made it much much better. Beyoncé Knowles was almost in Beauty and the Beast. ‘nough said.

Such a casting additional wouldn’t have been the biggest surprise, considering the musician starred in director Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls. In an interview with Yahoo, Condon reveals that he offered Queen Bey a role in his Beauty and the Beast, however because we live in the terribleness that is 2017, it never happened. Condon wanted to cast Knowles as the feather duster Plumette in the live-action remake, a part that went to Gugu Mbatha-Raw. But apparently the role was too small for, you know, one of the most famous singers in the world.

Beauty and the Beast already broke a slew of box office records – the highest-grossing PG movie of all time, the most successful live-action musical of all time, and so on. Just imagine how much more money it would’ve made if the Beyoncé was in it.

Then again, it’s perhaps a good thing the musician had the sense to turn the gig down. As much as it breaks my heart thinking of the alternate universe Beyoncé Beauty and the Beast that could’ve been, how weird would it have been to see hear her voice a feather duster who falls in love with Ewan McGregor with a bad French accent? That actually sounds terrible, and if Knowles is going to be in any Disney movie, I still have my hopes set on those Lion King rumors. But if you want to be depressed all over again, just think about that other alternate timeline in which Idris Elba almost played Gaston in the new Beauty and the Beast. We get the pop culture we deserve.
