A gender-swapped remake of a 1987 rom-com starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as a mismatched couple? Sure, why not. It’s not exactly the most inventive idea, nor is Overboard the sort of movie begging for a contemporary remake, but that’s what sort of makes this news unsurprising: Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez will star in a new remake of the classic Garry Marshall film.
Netflix has been on a real tear lately, releasing trailers and sneak peeks at several of their upcoming Original releases, including Bright — the gritty fantasy cop drama from director David Ayer, in which Will Smith plays an officer paired with an orc (yes, really) played by Joel Edgerton. Following last week’s debut of the first teaser, new image and details have arrived to shed a little more light on this strange movie.
It took a few days, but the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has finally come to a decision: The two PricewaterhouseCooper accountants involved in this year’s Best Picture snafu, dubbed “Envelopegate,” will not be allowed to work at the Oscars again. DreamWorks and Universal’s surprise animated hit is — unsurprisingly — getting a sequel. The news comes on the heels of Justin Timberlake’s charismatic opening number at the 2017 Oscars earlier this week — something most of you probably forgot all about at least two hours before Envelopegate even happened, somewhere between candy parachutes and that weird tour bus interlude.

When Lucasfilm initially revealed Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the full title for Episode VIII, rampant nerdy speculation ensued over what it might mean. Since “Jedi” could be either singular or plural, the title of Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel implied a few possibilities — Luke could (obviously) be the last Jedi, or maybe it’s Rey, or maybe it’s both of them (and maybe others?). Thanks to the official international titles for the film, and a little assistance from social media, we now have an answer.
Early on, you might’ve expected Hugh Jackman’s final bow as Wolverine to go out with a bang, like a giant farewell party where all his old and new friends are there to wave him off into the sunset. The recent results of USC’s annual study pegged Disney as one of the worst offenders when it comes to hiring diverse directors, which makes today’s news pretty darn positive: The studio has tapped director Niki Caro (best known for Whale Rider) to helm their live-action reimagining of Mulan, making her the second woman to direct a film with a budget of over $100 million for Disney — that’s the second woman ever in the entire history of the studio.
